Production area

At present India is into the production of vegetable seeds in acres of land in Northern India comprising states of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.

Growth promotional activities

Central Sector Scheme on Transport Subsidy on Movement of seed was launched in 1986- 87 through NSC / SFCI. Modified in 1998– 99, this scheme allowed of 100 percent reimbursement of transportation cost for the movement of seeds produced outside the state, the actual cost. It was restricted to maximum of Rs. 60 per quintal for the movement of seed within the state from state capital / district headquarters to sale outlets / sale counters.

During IX th plan, a provision of Rs. 1,00,000 thousand has been made available for this scheme. During 1999– 2000, there is a provision of Rs. 1,98,00 thousand and against this Rs. 1,01,00 thousand was reimbursed and for 2000– 2001, an amount of Rs. 85,00 thousand (BE) and revised expenditure of Rs. 45,00 thousand is likely to be reimbursed.

Vegetable Seeds Types

In India although stress is given on the production of all vegetable seeds for domestic requirements but hybrid vegetable seeds like Tomato, Watermelon, Hot Pepper etc. are given major importance, keeping in mind the international market demands and status.
