| Salient features | The survey was taken up for the crop year 1996-97, 97-98 and 98-99, covering Cereals, viz. Paddy, Wheat, Jowar, Bajra, Maize, Ragi & Barley and Pulses, viz. Red Gram (Arhar or Tur), Gram (Chana), Green Gram (Moong). 15,000 Cultivator Households were selected from 100 selected Districts of 25 States. The field survey was conducted by the Field Investigators of Designated State Agencies (DSAs) under the supervision & guidance of Officers of the Directorate of Marketing & Inspection posted at State H.Qs. A Technical Committee was set up under the Chairmanship of the Agricultural Marketing Adviser to the Govt. of India, to monitor the survey. For the purpose of field survey, Six Schedules were designed. Schedule I & II were one time Schedules and information on village profile was collected by the field investigators only once. Information in Schedules III to VI was collected by the field investigators on quaterly basis over a period of three years (1996-97, 97-98 and 98-99). The National Informatics Centre (NIC) provided technical support by designing data entry module for computer data entry and development of software for data analysis. The Regional Computer Centre, Calcutta, provided the services for data entry in view of the shortage of manpower with the DMI. The methodology for Estimation of Marketable Surplus has been finalised in consultation with the IASRI, New Delhi. The data analysis of schedule I & II has since been completed and Part I of the Survey Report based on these two schedules has been prepared. Copies are being made for circulation. |
| Pattern of Assistance | The Ministry sanctioned grant-in-aid @ Rs.1.50 lakhs per district per year to the Designated State Agencies for conducting the field survey. The field survey has since been completed and the data processing is in progress. |
| Eligibility | The grant-in-aid was sanctioned to the Designated State Agencies of the 25 States who gave their consent to undertake the survey. |

The report on estimation of marketable surplus & post harvest losses will be drafted thereafter for submission to the Competent Authority. |
| Additional Information | The survey report when finalised and approved by the Competent Authority will be circulated to all the users at National level & International level. The data will extensively be used in framing estimates of Net National Product for compilation of All India Index Numbers of Wholesale Prices for planning, procurement etc. |
