| Salient features | i) Under this scheme the Government provides non-recurring grants-in-aid up to Rs.20.00 lakhs for setting up bio fertilizer production units of 150 MT capacity. The grant-in-aid is offered to State Departments of Agriculture/cooperatives/public sector undertakings of fertilisers, NGOs and private agencies provided their proposals are received from respective State Governments. ii) One time grant-in-aid to the extent of Rs.1.50 lakhs is provided for establishment of Blue-green algae sub-centre to produce 30-40 tonnes of BGA/annum provided their proposals are received from respective State Governments. iii) This scheme is being implemented in the country with the help of a National and 6 Regional centres for training, field demonstration and its promotion and also through Department of Agriculture & Cooperation i.e. release of one time grant-in-aid for setting up BF units. |
| Pattern of Assistance | Financial assistance of 20 lakhs is being provided for creating a production capacity of 150 tons of biofertilisers per annum and Rs.10 lakhs for 75 tons capacity per annum. The grants are released through the State Governments in two installments. |
| Eligibility | The grants may be released to State Departments of Agriculture/cooperatives/public sector undertakings of fertilisers, NGOs and also to private entrepreneurs provided their proposals are received through respective State Govt. |
| Procedures to apply | Proposed to implement the scheme through NABARD/NCDC during 2001-2002. Revised guidelines are under preparation. |

| Implementation Status | i) National Biofertilizer Development Centre has been established at Ghaziabad with six Regional Biofertilizer Development Centres each at Jabalpur, Hissar, Nagpur, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar and Imphal. ii) Under this scheme 74 BF production units have been established with central financial assistance having annual production capacity of 8475 tonnes. |
| Additional information | Bio fertilizers are being considered important component of Integrated Plant Nutrient System (IPNS) and Organic farming for sustaining the agriculture. |
